Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery – Est. 1758

Based at the historic Old Brewery in Tadcaster, Samuel Smith’s is an independent British brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients.

The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares, made of solid blocks of slate, to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. The yeast is roused during fermentation to get oxygen to the yeast underneath the roof of the stone square. The system of fermentation results in a particularly full-bodied, rich, malty tasting beer.

This superior Alcohol Free ale, served in a larger than average 355ml bottle with less than 0.5%ABV. It is dark brown in colour with mahogany highlights and a lingering tight ecru head. The nose is malt forward and the beer is dry and satisfying. The dry malty character is an excellent complement to spicy food.

What we have here is a pleasingly straightforward beer. Unlike many low-alcohol beers, it’s not trying too hard to be wacky and different. It’s just a good-quality dark ale with a beautiful colour and a nice malty flavour. In many ways, it’s quite similar to their famous Nut Brown Ale, but with about a tenth the amount of alcohol.

The bottle label is based on an advertising poster used by Samuel Smith’s in the 1950s.

Samuel Smith’s Shire horses are stabled behind the Angel & White Horse, the pub next to the brewery. The horses are used to make local deliveries in and around Tadcaster five days a week.

A Note from Andy on Sam’s Brown Ale:

“This is one of my favourite AF beers, it’s a great drink when you have a thirst and want to down a good beer. I like the 355ml bottle it just lasts that bit longer. As some of you know I tread the boards with The Tadcaster Theatre Company so it’s great to support this local independent (if a bit quirky!!) brewery. This has the same level of flavour and attention to detail that I’d expect from full strength Sam Smiths, down to the label and neck of the bottle and the contents within, delicious. Very well held body for this brown ale with an effervescence that dances delicately around the tongue, imparting all of that brewing expertise around the mouth.
